Solution
Just stick to Ubuntu 24.04 LTS if your stuff is old and install the proprietary NVIDIA drivers directly from the OS installer DO NOT instal them via apt.
After installation, verify that you are running X11 by running echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE in the terminal. If it outputs x11, you're good to go.
Backgrounds
I had a bunch of old PC hardware sitting in my closet, so I figured, why not build an Ubuntu rig? I really wanted to isolate my main gaming PC from my other tasks. Since Ubuntu is free, lightweight, and highly compatible, it was exactly what I needed.
